Too often we live our lives as if we can see no further than the moment we are living in. Momentary troubles are just that—momentary! Hang on! You can make it!

READY TO WORK FIRE

I took my helmet off and placed it on the ground near me, and then unhooked the parachute from my harness, looking into the sky towards the approaching plane as I did so. My partner would be coming out the door in a few moments. I unsnapped my harness and removed it and then began getting out of the bulky jump suit. It was always good to get out of the suit, yet all of us knew it was one of the most critical pieces of equipment we had. It protected the wearer from trees and limbs, rocks and other dangers that were all a part of landing in the rugged mountainous country we regularly jumped into.

I heard the sound of the plane’s engines as the pilot throttled back a bit, signaling that my partner was about ready to jump. I looked up again, watching the plane 1000 feet above me, and saw my partner fall away toward the ground. Moments later his parachute came out of its bag and he was headed towards the ground, hanging beneath a good “chute.” He would be in the meadow near me within a matter of minutes. Good!

I began to gather up my gear, stuffing the jump suit and helmet into a bag that we all carried for that purpose. I looked up every few moments to survey the progress of my partner. It looked as if he was going to be landing no more than 50 feet or so from me. I stopped gathering my equipment together to watch his landing, hearing the sound of the air moving through his parachute as he approached the ground. He flexed his legs and prepared for landing. With a loud grunt he struck the ground, rolled over and lay still for just an instant as his parachute settled into the grass nearby.

A moment later, my partner sat up, and then got to his feet, pulling his bright orange streamer out of his leg pocket as he did so to signal the men in the plane that he was safe and uninjured. “Good jump!” I yelled at him. “Now it is time to work fire!”

If you had told me a few years earlier that I would have been in such a place, at such a time, doing what I was doing……I would probably have said, “No way!” Thinking about that reminds me of the story out of the Old Testament book of Esther. If you have not read Ester recently, try to take a brief period of time and read the account held within its pages. I suspect it just might grab your attention and hold it. At one point the young woman, Esther, is questioning her position in life that comes at a critical point in the history of the Jewish people. In chapter 4, in the last portion of verse 14, the man who raised her, Mordecai, asks, “And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?”

Say, now! That can be a thought-provoking question for any of us when we are at a point, wondering why we are where we are, at any given time. We may not always be too excited about some of the situations we find ourselves in during our journey through this life and yet, maybe there is a purpose behind it all we don’t understand or see—just yet. When that happens, hang in there. “Who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?”

Prayer: Lord, I must admit there have been times in life when I have wondered just why I have had to experience the difficulties, the headaches, and occasionally even the suffering that I was beset with. Help me remember, as I journey through this life with you, that there is no such thing as a “coincidence,” when it comes to the plans of God for me. Yes. Help me remember. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
