THROUGH THE ROOF!

As I continued to look through the blinds of our bedroom window at the scene unfolding in front of me, I became increasingly certain that the three young men I was watching were not up to anything good. The “lookout,” standing just below the window I was looking out of, could not stand still. He was obviously very anxious and would step out from the side of our house to look down the alley every few seconds. Then he would peer nervously around the front corner of our house to look up and down the street. Then he would back up against the house and watch his partners across the street for a moment.

The two young men across the street had taken hold of a large garbage dumpster, and as I watched, they pushed it up against the side of an older brick building that housed a small museum. I was also aware that the building was next to a pharmacy, and there were a string of other business on down the block, all of them sharing common walls between them. One of the young fellows closed the lids on the top of the dumpster and hoisted himself up on top. The boy with him then climbed up next to him. Moments later one of the boys helped the other jump up, grab hold of the edge of the flat-roofed building, and in a matter of seconds he had pulled himself up onto the roof. He then reached down and helped pull his partner up behind him. They turned, and crouched low, moved off quickly in the direction of the pharmacy building’s roof.

I took one more glance at the “lookout,” and he appeared to be beside himself with excitement, fear, or both. He could not stand still. He was a blob of steady movement. His head was moving one way and then another all the time. None the less, it was time for someone to do something!

In 1 John 3:16-17, in the paraphrase of the Bible, The Message, we find these words: This is how we’ve come to understand and experience love: Christ sacrificed his life for us. This is why we ought to live sacrificially for our fellow believers, and not just be out for ourselves. If you see some brother or sister in need and have the means to do something about it but turn a cold shoulder and do nothing, what happens to God’s love? It disappears. And you made it disappear.

As I turned away from that window, I knew the owners of those businesses were in need of action on my part. And though they may not have realized it, those young men were in need of someone to intervene in their lives and take action that would hopefully get them back on track in their lives. Each one of us has such opportunities during our lives!

Prayer: Father, help me never to lose opportunities to be used by you in others lives, simply because I would rather not get involved. When given the chance, help me to always step out and react as You would want, and on your behalf! In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
