COMMON SENSE

I stood back from the window, making sure I was in the darkness of the room, where the glow of the streetlight outside did not light up my face. The fellows on the roof across the street had been out of sight for several minutes. The young man standing just outside our window was appearing to become more nervous with each passing movement. He looked one way, then another, while he danced back and forth from one foot to the other.

Suddenly, I heard the sound of a rapidly accelerating vehicle off in the distance. Oh, boy! The law must be coming! A moment later I could clearly hear the sound of another car coming from the opposite direction, accompanied by the sound of squealing tires as it rounded a corner in its travel.

The young fellow outside the window obviously heard the sound of the two cars approaching. He stepped out away from the wall of our house for a moment, apparently to get a better look down our street towards its intersection with Main Street. Now he was really getting agitated. It was clear that he sensed trouble for himself and his two friends was rapidly approaching. Sadly, he apparently lacked the good sense to realize he should never have allowed himself to be in such a situation in the first place.

As a young boy, it was not unusual for me to hear one of my parents comment about the apparent lack of common sense, on my part, which resulted in some unpleasant result. I grew up realizing that common sense was a virtue to be desired; a character trait of high value.

In the Old Testament, in Proverbs 2:7, we find these words of wisdom: He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.

There are quite a number of other verses of scripture that make clear the value of “common sense.” I hope I have gained some of that over the years. . . . . . My mother would no doubt hope so, too!

Prayer: Father, give me the gift of good sense—or maybe it would be best to say, common sense. Guide me and direct me in the decisions I will find I need to make this week. Help me to get into the habit of seeking your direction each time I am confronted with a choice that may seem perplexing. Yes, Lord, guide me! In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.

Sadly, too many people leave the church today, because many churches are slow to forgive. Jesus isn’t!

Don’t be paralyzed by your past when it comes to approaching Christ. The disciples came running to him again and again without regard to past sin or shame. He accepted them!
