Love God, even in the darkness. . . . even when you can’t feel Him. He is still there. He has not left you; nor will he.

BEEN POKED LATELY?

The moment I touched my wife’s shoulder, as she stood in the darkened room staring intently out the window, I knew I should have taken a different course of action. Oh, yes! No sooner had my finger touched her than both her arms flew up from her sides and she let out a muffled ARRGH!, as if she had just stubbed her toe on a sharp rock….or something like that. At the same time she spun around and her arms began flailing in my direction like blades on a windmill gone crazy.

I stumbled backwards to try and get out of the way of those deadly weapons, tripped over the corner of the bed in my haste to avoid being struck by her, and ended up in a heap on the bedroom floor with an accompanying grunt.

“What do you think you are doing!” she hissed at me. At least she hissed instead of yelled. She apparently was still cognizant of the fact that there was still a young man standing outside our window. Or was he? With all the noise we had generated in the last few seconds I wondered if he was still there.

I motioned towards my wife with my hand to keep quiet, shrinking back a bit from the glare she had fixed on me, as I tried to get quietly up from the floor. At least I hadn’t knocked a lamp onto the floor as I went down. That would certainly have alerted the guy outside the house, if nothing else had.

I walked slowly and quietly back to the window, trying to ignore the angry look my wife continued to give me, and peeked out through the glass. The fellow was still standing there, but it was obvious he must have heard some of the noise we made. His head looked as if it was on a swivel that was rapidly moving first one way and then the other. I could tell that he was really nervous, now. He was moving his weight from one foot to another and he just couldn’t stand still.

Just then my wife poked me in the side, hard! I jumped! Oh, me.

People got poked in the Bible, too. Peter was one of them. In Acts 12:7, we read that, “Suddenly an angel from the Lord appeared, and light flashed around in the cell. The angel poked Peter in the side and woke him up. Then he said, ‘Quick! Get up!’ The chains fell off his hands,….”

Peter had quite a story to tell after this particular night. He was in jail, chained between two soldiers, and he had been poked by God! He ended up being witness to a miracle as the chains fell off his hands and the doors to the jail were thrown open. As your read through this account you see one miracle after another occurring.

Have you ever been “poked” by God? I think most of us have. I would suggest that most of the time His “pokes” are gentle ones. He begins to impress upon us the need for some action or change and we can’t get it out of our minds until we are obedient to Him. I am not sure he sneaks up on us, and pokes us, but I would imagine that many of us have received his pokes, that were not so gentle, and we knew that God was asking for our obedience, and in no uncertain terms! I think Peter could relate to that.

Prayer: Father, cause me to follow you so closely that when you “poke” me I recognize it. Then help me to always be obedient to you. Thank You, Father! In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.

Too often we fail to say “No,” thus extending ourselves because of our fear of rejection by those around us.
