HE KNOWS YOUR NAME

As I watched one of the police officers drive away with two young men in the back seat, it seemed as if it had been a long time ago that I had first called 9-1-1 to report the activity of these fellows. Yet, I realized it had only been a matter of minutes. Several patrol cars were still parked in the area and after several minutes I saw an officer walking towards our front door. I met him in the doorway and he thanked me for the call, telling me they had caught the two teenage boys just after they had entered the nearby pharmacy through an opening they had found in the roof for ventilation.

The officer asked me to go over again all that I had seen and witnessed and he asked me a number of questions as we talked. Finally, he thanked me and then turned to leave.

“What about the guy that ran off down the alley?” I asked him.

The officer stopped and turned towards me as he said, “We didn’t catch him; but we know his name. We know who he is. We’ll catch him.”

As I think back on that night, I am reminded that you and I are loved by a God who doesn’t see us as a tiny speck in a mass of humanity. He knows my name! He knows your name! He knows all about us! In fact, He knows everything there is to know about us! That is mind-boggling!

In the paraphrase of the Bible, The Message, in John, chapter 4, we find an account of Jesus approaching a public well outside of a village in Samaria. He gets in a discussion with a woman who soon realizes that Jesus is not just a man; he is the Messiah. In verse 39 she was speaking to some acquaintances, later on, and she said, “Many of the Samaritans from that village committed themselves to him because of the woman’s witness: “He knew all about the things I did. He knows me inside and out!”

That is still true today. He not only knows my name, he knows me inside and out! Yet, he still loves me and still cares for me. He is that One who makes life worth living!

Prayer: Father, thank you for the reality that you really do know my name. You know all about me. You know everything I have ever done, and you still love me and care for me. Thank, you, Lord! In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
