Many folks have so many layers of rationalization surrounding their souls, that it takes God a long time to cut through them all so the person realizes their need of Him.

THE JUNK PILE

As we three boys sat in the warm sunshine of that fall morning, we all seemed lost in our own thoughts for several minutes. Finally, Eddy spoke up and said, “We should do somthin’; we need to do somethin’.”

Andy replied with a quick, “What?”

Neither Eddy nor I had an answer for him.

Our eyes were drawn to the noise of an old pickup driving by on the street/highway in front of our house. It was quickly obvious that someone must have been cleaning up, somewhere, as the back of the pickup was piled high with junk. We watched as it passed by, headed to the east, and then began to slow down.

“I wonder where he’s goin’ with that stuff?” I asked.

Suddenly, it was like a light had been switched on in all of our brains at the same time. “Hey! Hey!” Andy hollered.

The three of us jumped to our feet, nearly in unison, but Andy was in the lead as he took off around the corner of our house and headed for the back yard with Eddy and I close on his heels. Within moments the three of us were standing on the benches of a picnic table in our yard, staring off to the north towards a mountain named Gold Hill.

In a matter of less than a minute we spotted it. The pickup with all the junk piled in the back was headed out of town, a cloud of dust being kicked up behind on the dirt road it was traveling on. And we knew one of the spots that dirt road led to!

“I’ll bet he’s goin’ to the junk pile!” Eddy yelled. “Let’s go see!”

I suppose I could say that Andy and I, as the careful thinkers in the trio, suggested we pause for a time of careful thought and discussion about the matter first. No! Andy and I were headed for our bicycles and Eddy was racing across the street to get his. We were on a mission! It was as if we had been given a charge by someone in authority over us and we were going to follow through!

In the New Testament, in First Timothy 6:12-14, we read the following: Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you, which you have declared so well before many witnesses. 13 And I charge you before God, who gives life to all, and before Christ Jesus, who gave a good testimony before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you obey this command without wavering. Then no one can find fault with you from now until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.

The Apostle Paul was writing to the young man, Timothy, when he penned these words, but they are relevant for the Christian today. It is a charge each of us should accept and hold on to.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the instructions for life You have given us in your Word. Help us to wholeheartedly, and unreservedly, accept the charge to follow You and live for You! In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.

Sadly, there are too many people in our churches today who are only committed to maintenance. They want to just get by. They are no longer committed to keeping a “cutting edge on their axe,” as it were.
