It is possible to be a Christian for many years, or appear to be, and yet be ineffective for the Lord.

DULL AND INDIFFERENT

It was a warm, early fall morning. It was Saturday and my brother, Andy, and I had become bored with life. A boy about our age, who lived across the street, had wandered over a few minutes earlier to ask what we were doing, and the quick reply had been, “Nuthin.”

Eddy plunked himself down on the steps to our house where we were seated, rested his chin in his hands like Andy and I were doing, and replied to our “nuthin,” with a “Hmmm.”

It all sounded pretty serious, you understand. Since it was Saturday, we all felt as if we should be doing something; we just could not think of anything worthwhile at the moment. We were wasting time! What were we to do? We were bored.

It seems that young children, particularly boys, can go through periods of time when they become bored too easily. I am not so sure there aren’t people in churches today that are bored; they have found the whole business of “religion,” to be dull. That’s an extremely risky place to be in!

In the New Testament, in Hebrews 6:11-12, we find the following words: Our great desire is that you will keep on loving others as long as life lasts, in order to make certain that what you hope for will come true. 12 Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God’s promises because of their faith and endurance.

That makes it appear that there is something positive in turning our interests outward, and towards others, rather than always inward.

Prayer: Lord, help me to never fall into the trap of always focusing inward; without considering my fellow humans who are all around me. Keep me consistent in loving and caring for others. Don’t allow me to ever become spiritually dull and indifferent. Thank you, Father, for watching over me! In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.

God is not in the business of making us humanly stronger. In fact, it is at the point of our greatest weakness where God can finally begin to work. We simply must allow Him to.

God’s unlimited forgiveness can be hampered by our failure to forgive others, or by failing to forgive ourselves. Don’t allow that to happen!
